Certificate I in Construction graduate and Apprentice

Being a Hutchies apprentice you get to experience all different types of Construction. One year you may be working on a high rise apartment and the next year working in the modular construction yard building anything from houses, to hospitals to even school buildings.

I completed Certificate I in Construction twice, once at school and once with the Gold Coast School of Construction (GCSC), and I can say from experience that the GCSC is much better. I like to call it a “try a trade”.While completing the Certificate I at school you may build a little wall frame or a chopping board. Whereas when you complete the certificate with the GCSC you start off with learning the basics by building a saw horse and a hard wood decking chair, but then you get to build a building for the modular yard and experience working with all the other trades.

One week, I was working in the crane yard sling loads, guiding the franna moving items around the yard. I even got to drive the franna and the tower crane, and the next week I would be working with painters, plumbers and electricians. Being a Hutchies apprentice I have been given so many opportunities, I have travelled all over Queensland for work.

I have even travelled and lived in Western Australia for work. Hutchies offer you the support to push towards a rewarding career, I never pictured myself doing health and safety but Hutchies let me have a trial whilst I was still an apprentice and now I have just completed my Diploma in Workplace Health & Safety and I’m loving it.

“Getting up at 5am every morning then working a full day is a big change from sitting at school and writing things out, this program is a huge success as it has definitely changed my life forever.

One GCSC graduate’s mother, Karen Spain, commenting on our Doors 2 Construction (Certificate I in Construction) program
“On a personal note and speaking only of my experience as a parent, to see my daughter at the age of 16 gain more confidence, respect, experience work life, her school grades increase and see her 95% happier on a daily basis speaks volumes for this program.”

Nathan Duncan,

“Being trained with such a successful company as Hutchinson Builders has given me the opportunity to be an electrical apprentice. I wouldn’t have to be an electrical apprentice. I wouldn’t have had that anywhere else – you have turned our lives around.”

Aaron Hegarty,

Certificate I in Construction (Toowoomba Tradestart Programme), 2012

“I graduated from Kirwan State High School – my grandfather was a Carpenter in indigenous communities and when he passed away I was inspired to become a carpenter like him. The best part of my Tradestart course at Hutchies was the practical experience and it allowed me to get a career in timber trusses”

Kane Edwards,

“I worked in the meat industry for 10 years but this Tradestart course has given me the opportunity to get a full time career in the construction industry which will allow me to be a good father to my new baby daughter and look after my family.”

Ethan Johnson,

“I graduated from Harristown State High School and then I had the opportunity to be in Hutchies Tradestart program, which was great because I am soon to start my electrician apprenticeship.”
