MEETING ALEX SAWTELL

After being selected into GCSC to complete the certificate 1 in Building and Construction, it gave me the basic skills I needed to pursue a career in construction. During my time there I was given the opportunity to try out various trades such as, painting, boiler making, electrical, and carpentry.

I took a liking to being a carpenter and decided that is what I wanted to be. I was lucky enough to be offered an apprenticeship with Hutchinson Builders directly after completion of the course.

From beginning my apprenticeship in the modular yard building modular accommodation for mining. I have since worked on various jobs ranging from a 30 storey high rise renovation in Brisbane city. Town houses in the suburbs, installing modular accommodation on mining sites in Western Australia and Central Queensland, and have even been to Tasmania to work on a project in Hobart city.

Words that stuck with me when I was sitting in the classroom at GCSC were ‘there is no such thing as a stupid question’ so from that day I have always asked questions and have gained a wealth of knowledge from doing so and have always had the best support when I have ever been unsure on how to do something.

I am now working as a Leading Hand assisting Site Managers, Project Managers and Contracts Administrators to help run jobs.

I have loved every minute of my career so far and I only have the team at GCSC to thank!
